Planning isn’t restrictive, it’s freedom!

I hear from a lot of my weight loss clients that they don’t want to plan their meals because they don’t want to restrict themselves, they want the freedom to able to change their minds. But planning ahead and sticking to it can provide the same feeling of freedom they’re craving in different ways. How about freedom from being overweight? Freedom from arguing with yourself over what to eat? Freedom from beating yourself up for eating junk food?

Planning what you’re going to eat ahead of time is one of the best ways to ensure that what you’re eating is in your best interest. When you plan what you’re going to eat tomorrow night at your client dinner meeting, you’re using your prefrontal cortex – the part of your brain that’s interested in losing weight and gaining health. But when you make a decision in the moment at the dinner, you’re more likely to be responding to your primitive brain – the part of you that’s addicted to sugar and flour.

So check out the restaurant’s menu online the day before and decide which of the healthy options or entrée salads you’ll have. Then when you’re at the event you’ll be free from brain chatter about what to eat, you’ll already know! The more you practice this, the easier it will become to ignore your primitive brain’s requests for junk food and instead order what you planned. And as you become detoxed from sugar and flour, you’ll get less and less pressure from your primitive brain and you’ll feel more relaxed because you can trust yourself around food. That is true freedom, and it’s such a relief!
